Hi Everyone! This is Jacqueline Casey and Sean Busey with another D&D video: A History of Magic!
We are taking a look through DnD Beyond.com since we are subscribers; however, there are plenty of free resources on magic out there! One particular post I enjoyed was The Alpine DM’s Simple Guide to D&D 5e Schools of Magic and for imagery, the below Reddit post from u/SirPerson36 in the subreddit Alignment Charts.
There are many playable classes which use magic. The classics include Bards, Clerics, Druids, Paladins, Rangers, Sorcerers, Warlocks, and Wizards. In this video, we are going to focus on the basic schools of magic, the type of magic they produce, and an example of a spell from each school.
D&D magic started with the Wizards, an timeless and enigmatic character class. Wizards focus their learnings in different magic schools and can often cast spells from each. Limits to a wizard’s power is how many spells can be prepared at one time, the length of time needed to produce a spell, and any material components. Some of the more powerful spell include rare materials.
D&D Beyond has a great feature for looking up spells using different criteria; we talk about each school and find some spells from each!
The School of Abjuration – magic that blocks, banishes, or protects.
The School of Conjuration – magic that produce objects and creatures out of thin air.
The School of Divination – magic that seeks a clearer understanding of the past, present, and future.
The School of Enchantment – magic that entrances and beguiles other people and monsters.
The School of Evocation – magic that creates powerful elemental effects such as bitter cold, searing flame, rolling thunder, crackling lightning, and burning acid.
The School of Illusion – magic that dazzles the senses, befuddles the mind, and tricks even the wisest folk.
The School of Necromancy – magic that manipulates the cosmic forces of life, death, and undeath.
The School of Transmutation – magic that modifies energy and matter.

Jacqueline, wow this is so cool! I am blown away by the amount of thought and effort you put into this video and also the time you took to explain all the different nuances of D&D. Though I know this is only scratching the surface of what the game has to offer, it is still pretty cool to see all there is to do and the paths you can create. My favorite podcast, Pardon My Take, has a D&D segment they run every two weeks and it is cool to see all these terms referenced again! Kudos.
